Five Foskett Feeds!

I’ve decided to add additional sub-feeds to my blog for those who don’t care about one topic or another. If you’re currently subscribed, this means nothing to you since the current feed is a super-set containing all posts. But if you want just a subset, read on!

There are now five Foskett feeds!

All Posts (the superset of the following)
Computer History – mapped to the Computer History category and containing posts about this history of computers and other oldy moldy topics
Enterprise Storage – mapped to the Enterprise Storage category and containing lots of industry news and opinions
Personal – mapped to the Personal category and containing posts of interest to friends and family
Terabyte Home – mapped to the Terabyte Home category and containing posts about TiVo, iPhone, SoundBridge, home NAS, Windows, and the like

There will be much overlap between categories (see the posts in the current list) but I thought this might help folks not have to listen to so much that they don’t care about. Just call me Fox News!

I certainly benefit from standardization of the world around me, and I welcome interoperability and interchangeability as well as the price and product selection advantages. But I am not blithely focused on standardization above all else. I will happily use a proprietary solution if the alternative is inelegant, ineffective, or insufficient.

Faster Ethernet Gets Weird

“One size fits all” doesn’t work for Ethernet, but this proliferation of speed options sounds like trouble without automatic capability negotiation. It’s nice to have options, but the IEEE must remain focused on interoperability and rein in the interests of the various companies proposing next-generation Ethernet technologies.

Nimble Storage Rolls Out an All-Flash Array

It took longer than I expected for Nimble Storage to introduce an all-flash array, but their AF7000 looks to be a very credible offering. They’re targeting XtremIO and Pure with their marketing, but I expect HP, Dell, and especially NetApp to be cross-shopped more frequently. In that fight, I expect the Nimble AF7000 to be very attractive indeed!

I was thrilled by the possibilities of adding a professional-quality camera sensor and lens to my iPhone, so I immediately pre-ordered Sony’s DSC-QX100 “lens camera”. It held so much promise, not just as a real innovation but also as a major productivity tool. That’s why I’m angry to write this, a scathing review of the horrid software that ruins the QX10 and QX100 experience. Do not buy this device.

The Software-Defined Datacenter is a great concept, but it just won’t work. The big enterprise companies will never allow VMware (and daddy EMC) to commoditize them out of existence, so useful implementations will be rarer than ruby slippers. The best we can hope for is point enhancements to enable greater virtual machine mobility through SDN and improved storage integration.
