It’s Fine To Mount Hard Drives On Their Side Or Even Upside-Down

August 13, 2016 By Stephen 6 Comments

Have you ever wondered if mounting a hard disk drive on its side or even upside-down affects its lifespan or reliability? According to every drive manufacturer, it's perfectly acceptable to mount a hard disk drive in any orientation as long as it's not tilted and has sufficient cooling. File this under "now you know"... My new server case, the NZXT H440, has five drive … [Read more...] about It’s Fine To Mount Hard Drives On Their Side Or Even Upside-Down

Leaving Toshiba with just a sliver, the American companies will soon become giants, each with more than 40% of the total HDD share and a full line of products. Despite the noise made by solid-state disk (SSD) … [Read more...] about Seagate Versus Western Digital: The Hard Disk Drive Battle Lines Are Drawn

Concerning HDS

April 6, 2011 By Stephen 6 Comments

I've been following the progress of Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) for well over a decade. When I participated in high-end enterprise storage system shootouts as an end-user, HDS routinely placed second against EMC, HP and NetApp in the, and the decision was always a close one. But the storage market has changed, with nimble startups innovating around established competitors and … [Read more...] about Concerning HDS
