Dell, Wall Street, Magic Beans, and the End of EMC

September 7, 2016 By Stephen 1 Comment

As of today, EMC Corporation is no longer an independent company. Who thought we would see this day? From now on, EMC is simply a brand for parts of Dell's Infrastructure Solutions and Services businesses. This marks a major shift in the enterprise storage world, for IT, and perhaps for American business in general. Investors Are Happy with Magic Beans? I have been … [Read more...] about Dell, Wall Street, Magic Beans, and the End of EMC

Migrating Data With ZFS Send and Receive

August 18, 2016 By Stephen 5 Comments

I'm a huge fan of rsync as a migration tool, but FreeNAS is ZFS-centric so I decided to take a shot at using some of the native tools to move data. I'm not sold on it for daily use, but ZFS Send and Receive is awfully useful for "internal" maintenance tasks like moving datasets and rebuilding pools. Since this kind of migration isn't well-documented online, I figured I would … [Read more...] about Migrating Data With ZFS Send and Receive

It’s Fine To Mount Hard Drives On Their Side Or Even Upside-Down

August 13, 2016 By Stephen 6 Comments

Have you ever wondered if mounting a hard disk drive on its side or even upside-down affects its lifespan or reliability? My new server case, the NZXT H440, has five drive … [Read more...] about It’s Fine To Mount Hard Drives On Their Side Or Even Upside-Down

Free as in Coffee – Thoughts on the State of OpenStack

May 2, 2016 By Stephen 1 Comment

Last week I headed to Austin, Texas to attend the semi-annual OpenStack Summit there. Along with the usual socializing, I was looking to understand the current state of the technology: What does OpenStack really mean these days, and where is it going? Let's start with "free". As "the Internet" is quick to point out, this critical word has multiple meanings, and corporate … [Read more...] about Free as in Coffee – Thoughts on the State of OpenStack

Nimble Storage Rolls Out an All-Flash Array

February 24, 2016 By Stephen 1 Comment

As of today, there's one more all-flash storage array on the market: Nimble Storage convened a big San Francisco shindig to roll out their own "AF" array, complete with lots of XtremIO and Pure Storage comparisons. Finally, Nimble no longer has to suffer the competitive digs and nasty rumors about this missing product, but there's a lot more to this launch than an array sans … [Read more...] about Nimble Storage Rolls Out an All-Flash Array
