EMC Quietly Acquires WysDM Software

Wow! EMC has apparently purchased WysDM Software, maker of a most excellent range of data protection and storage management software. This is a great move for EMC, and if everyone at WysDM is as happy as my old StorageNetworks co-worker, Alan Atkinson, seems to be in this InternetNews article, their offices must be something to see! It couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch of guys…

Thanks to Storagezilla for breaking the news. Someone should probably update the WysDM web site, too…

Scaling Storage In Conventional Arrays

It is amazing that something as simple-sounding as making an array get bigger can be so complex, yet scaling storage is notoriously difficult. Our storage protocols just werenâ€™t designed with scaling in mind, and they lack the flexibility needed to dynamically address multiple nodes. So my hat is off to these companies and others who have come up with clever ways to maintain compatibility while scaling out beyond the bounds of a single storage array.

I would not hesitate to recommend the Unicomp Spacesaver M to Macintosh users used to an original IBM Model M, and I am admittedly a tough customer. I wish that Unicomp would update their website, packaging, logo, and keyboard graphics, but none of this really matters as your fingers press the keys. If any keyboard is worth $100, it is the Unicomp Spacesaver M!

Have you ever wondered if mounting a hard disk drive on its side or even upside-down affects its lifespan or reliability? According to every drive manufacturer, it’s perfectly acceptable to mount a hard disk drive in any orientation as long as it’s not tilted and has sufficient cooling.
