iPhone Ahoy!

Shannon (my wife) got me an iPhone for an anniversary gift. Pretty cool eh? I’m typing this on it now.

So far my experience has not been good. It locks up constantly, forcing me to restore it repeatedly. Not sure if I got a bum unit or if its a software issue or what. I’m using Vista and Outlook 2007, a sure recipe for disaster!

Other than the stability problems I’m impressed. I’m coming from a BlackBerry 8700 so I expect to be disappointed in its enterprise integration. But I’ll put up with that to get the best web, google maps, voicemail, etc. Assuming I can keep it running that is!

Good to find you on the web. Hope all is well in OH.

Regarding the iPhone, I was tempted, but the (lack of) Exchange tie-in was a showstopper. Instead, I jumped ship with some trepidation from my Goodlink’ed Treo 700p to the Blackberry Curve and have been pleasantly surprised. Looks like I’ll be waiting till iPhone V2 or V3.

GPS Time Rollover Failures Keep Happening (But They’re Almost Done)

It took longer than I expected for Nimble Storage to introduce an all-flash array, but their AF7000 looks to be a very credible offering. They’re targeting XtremIO and Pure with their marketing, but I expect HP, Dell, and especially NetApp to be cross-shopped more frequently. In that fight, I expect the Nimble AF7000 to be very attractive indeed!

The Software-Defined Datacenter is a great concept, but it just won’t work. The big enterprise companies will never allow VMware (and daddy EMC) to commoditize them out of existence, so useful implementations will be rarer than ruby slippers. The best we can hope for is point enhancements to enable greater virtual machine mobility through SDN and improved storage integration.
