Interop NYC and The Great Debate: ISCSI Beats Fibre Channel

iSCSI is the challenger for long-dominant Fibre Channel protocol SAN

The battle lines are drawn between 8 Gb Fibre Channel and 1 Gb or 10 Gb iSCSI and NFS. This is the baseline for my Interop debate. I am not arguing about the future of SAN, or even iSCSI versus NFS. Rather, I am arguing that most businesses would be best served by implementing an iSCSI SAN rather than purchasing Fibre Channel today.

Back From the Pile: Interesting Links, February 4, 2011

I spent last week tying up loose ends before Tech Field Day 5 in San Jose. It’s going to be a great event, with presentations by Symantec, Drobo, Xangati, NetEx, InfoBlox, HP, and a new company making their US launch! In the mean time, I am working hard to wrap up the Small Enterprise Storage Array Buyers’ Guide for DCIG and continuing my regular work – spreading the word about state of the art IT! I’ve been researching VMware extensively, and building a home lab server, in preparation for my Storage for Virtual Servers seminar, too.

Back From the Pile: Interesting Links, January 14, 2011

This regular series features highlights from the week. It was another big one for me, with my Network Computing writing gig starting up, the announcement of my Storage for Server Virtualization seminar series, and the finalization of Tech Field Day for February.

Are Hybrid Hard Drives A Good Alternative To An SSD?

Capacity, performance, or low cost: Pick two!

How well does the Momentus XT perform in a Mac laptop? Focusing on lower cost and greater benefit without getting taken in by the coolness of SSDs or hybrid drives, let’s weigh the merits.

Smoking-Fast Laptops: Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid SSD Disk Drive Confirmed!

Thar she blows! Seagate's hybrid ssd/hard disk drive is real!

There has been much speculation that a new generation of hybrid flash/hard disk drives was right around the corner, and Provantage confirmed it today: The reseller posted a family of “Momentus XT” 2.5″ laptop drives for sale on their web site, shipping in 3-4 weeks. Many other sites began listing the drives as well, and The Register got the scoop, benchmarks, and official comment.

In Praise of Performance Comparisons

IT needs application monitoring: Gauges alone won't get you to your destination!

I’ve long been critical of poorly-executed performance comparisons and the “fastest is always best” mentality behind them. But, although it sounds inconsistent, I still love reading the performance “comparos” in Car & Driver, and I am committed to the belief that the enterprise IT world needs lab tests and performance comparisons.

Back From The Pile: May 30, 2009

It was a week of HAM in the enterprise storage industry and angry arguments in the CloudCamp camp. But things looked up at the end with a productive discussion about backups. Google sent us a wave, but nobody was happy when GM threatened to collapse. Enterprise Storage HDS’ HAM-Fisted Announcement did not impress, with many wondering [...]

Spring Storage Networking World 2009, Here I Come!

I’m off to Orlando this morning for Storage Networking World (SNW) Spring 2009. It will be great to see all of my friends in the industry again, though EMC will be quiet in the run-up to EMC World and the DMX-5 “Tigon” launch mysterious April 14th announcement! I will be wearing two hats at the [...]
