What’s the difference between naughty and nice when it comes to IT companies? Microsoft and EMC would definitely not have made the nice list over the last decade, but things are changing. With their competition taking dents in the ongoing battles, Microsoft and EMC just don’t look so bad anymore.
My 2009 IT Industry Predictions

Predictions are perilous: Get it right and you look like a mere trend-watcher; get it wrong and you look like a fool. So I’m doing something different this year: I’m going to make predictions for 2009 now that it’s over, and reflect on just how smart I am (not) to have made them.
Drobo, XP Users: Beware of 4K “Advanced Format” Drives!

Personal computer hard disk drive access methods have been repeatedly forced to adapt to ever-expanding capacity. But Western Digital is leading the change to larger 4 kilobyte hard disk blocks. Although this new “Advanced Format” includes mechanisms for backwards compatibility, buyers should be wary of these new drives for the time being.
A Concrete Reason Macs Beat PCs: Intel VT
Posted by Stephen in Apple, Computer history, Terabyte home, Virtual Storage on 07. Aug, 2009 | Comments
There is a lot of FUD flowing between Apple Macintosh true believers and the rest of the PC world. This is especially true now that Macs use Intel CPUs, NVIDIA chipsets and graphics, and so much more commodity PC parts. Lots have argued that a Mac is just an expensive PC with a flashy case [...]

Microsoft just let loose a Release Candidate for Windows 7, the operating system that will bring peace, love, and joy to PC users everywhere and finally stop folks from switching to Macs instead of using Vista. Maybe.

My travels last week kept me from posting my weekly round-up of interesting web content. So this week’s is a little heavy (and heavily edited!)

Microsoft Working to Improve Windows 7 Boot Times
Posted by Stephen in Terabyte home on 29. Aug, 2008 | Comments
Confirming my observation of longish Windows boot times, Microsoft engineer Michael Fortin today blogged about the booting improvements scheduled for Windows 7.
He rightly points out that there are really three different “boot times” to consider:
Boot
Resume from sleep
Resume from hibernate
Note that the Microsoft definition of “boot (1)” only gets us through desktop launch and background task [...]

With Windows Server 2008 appearing in (surprisingly) 2008, and Windows 7 (client) scheduled for 2010, some folks grew mighty confused about the possibility of a Windows 7 Server appearing shortly thereafter. Even Microsofties talked about something called “Windows 7 Server” in blogs, newsgroups, and conferences.
So would there be a major Windows Server update just two [...]
