Is there no such thing as a cheap, prepaid data SIM in the USA?

Visitors: Good luck finding a prepaid broadband SIM in the USA

It’s hard to believe that a true prepaid mobile data SIM doesn’t exist in the USA, but it’s true. A GoPhone, H2O, or Net10 SIM isn’t a bad idea for your smartphone, but it’s not exactly cheap. The best option for those needing just mobile data is a local Virgin Mobile hotspot or a brand new Android phone or iPad!

Yes! Ford Offers “X-Plan” Pricing for Shareholders!

Apparently Ford Investor Relations can help!

I love cars, but I hate buying them. The car buying process can be a catfight or ripoff, and it’s never fun. That’s why I was pleased to hear that Ford offers “friends and family” (X plan) pricing to shareholders like me. But it’s been awfully difficult actually getting this benefit!

Buying a New iPad? Get the Awesome, Unlocked Verizon Model!

I’ve always loved my Wi-Fi iPad, but the Verizon LTE iPad (third-generation) is too awesome to overlook. Apart from the “retina” display and voice dictation, the killer app is unlocked roaming on just about any carrier network. Yes, you can use your Verizon iPad Verizon iPad on AT&T, Vodafone, or even Verizon!

Sony NEX-7 Hands-On Review Part 1: The New Super-Camera

The NEX-7 is everything I hoped it would be and more. And maybe that's not as great a thing as I thought!

It took over five months, but Sony finally delivered my NEX-7 kit on March 8 (my birthday, natch!). After using the camera for a few weeks, I can say it’s exactly what I hoped it would be: A worthy upgrade over the NEX-5, and perhaps the best enthusiast camera on the market. But it’s not without flaws, including some surprising shortcomings. Here’s my hands-on review!

Cheap, No-Contract 4G Data: Clear’s Undocumented Daily- and Weekly-Pass Plans

The Clear PXU1900 WiMAX modem is cheap, and daily service is a steal

Although Clear clearly wants buyers to sign up for monthly service, they also have “secret” on-demand 2-hour, daily, and weekly plans. Here’s how to get online cheap!

Verizon Offers Double 4G Data (But Not For MiFi)

November is a good time to sign up for a Verizon 4G smartphone

Verizon Wireless has a promotion running in November that doubles the data allowance for 4G phones. This is a great deal compared to competitors, and it comes with Verizon’s excellent 4G LTE coverage and performance. But it only applies to smartphones, not MiFi “mobile broadband” devices, and the offer ends in December.

Wireless Internet Access During My Trip To The Netherlands

This is the SIM card you want for T-Mobile's Netherlands data deal

The T-Mobile NL Laptop PrePaid SIM card is a great choice for use with an unlocked MiFi device like the Huawei E585. But make sure to set up the APN first, and register the card online immediately to get the full €10 credit!

An Inexpensive Mobile Broadband Alternative When Traveling in the UK

I highly recommend purchasing a local mobile broadband device to avoid extortionate roaming charges

I would not hesitate to recommend the Huawei E585 for use in the UK, especially with Three’s generous prepaid data offer. Since it can be unlocked for use in other European countries, it becomes all that much more useful. But it is disappointing it’s not more useful in the USA!

When Does XL No Longer Mean “Extra Large”? HP’s Printer Inks, Of Course!

HP's new 564XL cartridge isn't so "XL" as before - it's got 1/3 less ink!

Although HP reduced the size of their “XL” ink cartridge without telling anyone, it really is a better deal for the consumer. They’re upfront about the change, too, though I wish they had used a different part number. Rather than redefining “XL”, HP should have called the new size “564L” or used some other name.

Zoom H1 “Handy Recorder”: Hands-On Review

The Zoom H1 is a remarkable value in a portable stereo audio recorder

The H1 is a very handy device, produces excellent quality recordings, and is reasonably priced. It does just about everything I could want, including recording directly to MP3 on solid-state microSD storage. But I cannot recommend it with the battery drain issue I have experienced. Hopefully the replacement unit will remove the single concern.
