Buying a New iPad? Get the Awesome, Unlocked Verizon Model!

iPad_HandHero_PRINT

I’ve always loved my Wi-Fi iPad, but the Verizon LTE iPad (third-generation) is too awesome to overlook. Apart from the “retina” display and voice dictation, the killer app is unlocked roaming on just about any carrier network. Yes, you can use your Verizon iPad Verizon iPad on AT&T, Vodafone, or even Verizon!

Making Sense of Global Mobile Phone Networks

Most American networks use 850/1900 MHz, while most European countries use 900/2100 MHz and the rest of the world uses just 2100 MHz

The mobile phone network landscape is incredible confusing. I pulled together the following overview to help myself make sense of it, and I thought it might benefit my readers, too.

What’s the Difference Between a Jailbroken and an Unlocked Phone?

Jailbreaking and unlocking are two very different things!

If you’ve traveled much, you’ve probably run across “unlocked” mobile phones and devices. If you own an Android or iPhone smart phone, you probably also heard about “jailbreaking”. It seems like lots of people are confused about these two things, so I decided to write down a quick post explaining them.

NAB Show 2012: My Initial Thoughts

Snapshots become "images" with a fast lens like this

NAB Show remains one of my favorites, and one of the only trade shows I’d unreservedly recommend attending on one’s own dime. From Thunderbolt to post-HD video to solid state storage, NAB has it all.

Fusion-io Hits the Mass Market with the Affordable ioFX Card

Fusion-io's new ioFX card brings ioMemory to the masses

The ioFX was the highlight of NAB Show 2012 to me. Bringing massive performance to the masses, the ioFX continues Fusion-io’s tactic of shaking up the industry. And since it uses the same ioMemory architecture and drivers as the flagship ioDrive line, I expect Fusion-io will have difficulty keeping up with demand.

75% of Hamlet on the iPad Retina Screen

Hamlet on my lock screen. I'm not sure what this says about me, but I'm sure it says a lot!

3.1 megapixels is a whole lot of display. If the new iPad screen packs in enough pixels to display 65 pages of Hamlet at once, imagine what else it can show! The next time someone says “what’s so great about that screen” all I have to do is read them a scene or two from my lock screen.

Is SolidFire out in Left Field, or Are They Playing a Whole New Ballgame?

All-SSD cloud storage is not nuts. Here's why!

When I say “cloud storage”, you probably think of Amazon S3: Big, slow, cheap, and distributed. That’s probably why the people I talk to about SolidFire usually start shaking their heads and denouncing the company. After all, who would be crazy enough to create an all flash storage array for cloud storage applications? But maybe it’s not so crazy; maybe SolidFire is simply playing a different ballgame.

Google Plus “Instant Upload” for iPhone Images: Two Warnings

It's easy to enable Instant Upload by accident, since only one big button is available

My friend Brandon Carroll recently talked about Google Plus automatically uploading personal photos from the iPhone. His instructions are useful for those wishing to turn this feature off, I would like to add another caution: Although Google Plus’ “Instant Upload” feature is not the default, and it sets them private anyway, it’s easy accidentally to turn this feature on and end up in the same boat with Brandon. And the issue isn’t just privacy!

Why You Should Never Again Utter The Word, “CIFS”

No CIFS

CIFS is not the network storage protocol used by Microsoft Windows, and many other clients. The protocol used to share files over a LAN by the majority of personal computers is called SMB. I wish everyone in the industry would get that through their heads.

Preview: Two Thunderbolt Video Input and Output Devices from Blackmagic Design: Intensity Shuttle and Intensity Extreme

The sleek Blackmagic Design Intensity Extreme allows Thunderbolt-equipped computers to import ant export HDMI video

I was thrilled to see the announcement by Blackmagic Design of two Thunderbolt versions of their respected Intensity video input/output box. But which is the better choice, the Intensity Shuttle or Intensity Extreme?
