Good equipment can make the difference between an amateurish embarrassment and professional production when it comes to video recording. The combination of the Zi8 and my pair of microphones collect good enough source material to keep me in the latter category. Combined with the capabilities of Apple’s iMovie software, I can produce respectable videos anywhere I happen to find myself.

Azden SMX-10 Stereo Shotgun and Generic OLM-10 Lavalier Microphone Review
This pair of microphones serves me well. I mainly use the Azden SMX-10 when recording videos in public, resorting to the OLM-10 when recording unboxings and such in quiet settings. Sound quality is decent and they’re small enough to fit in my bag. Considering that one can walk out of B&H Photo with both microphones and change for a $100 bill, I call that a win!
Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camcorder Review
The Zi8 is like a Flip done right. It’s slimmer, uses SD cards instead of built-in storage, and has an input that supports both mic and line-level audio. Plus, it’s cheap at just over $100.
Zoom H1 “Handy Recorder”: Hands-On Review
The H1 is a very handy device, produces excellent quality recordings, and is reasonably priced. It does just about everything I could want, including recording directly to MP3 on solid-state microSD storage. But I cannot recommend it with the battery drain issue I have experienced. Hopefully the replacement unit will remove the single concern.
The First Thunderbolt Peripherals On Display At NAB Show
That NAB Show is a hotspot of Thunderbolt interest should come as no surprise: The broadcast and media professionals present represent a nexus of Apple customers and storage power users. Because they have been dragging their feet on eSATA and USB 3, Apple ran the risk of alienating this core customer group. But Thunderbolt promises to deliver a new level of performance and a whole world of peripherals. The excitement was palpable!
