Turn Your Smartphone Into A Serious Camera (For Real!)

September 4, 2013 By Stephen 1 Comment

The new Sony "Lens-Style Camera" is a bold move, bringing high-end optics and sensors to smartphones everywhere. The new QX10 and QX100 strip away the camera body, consisting of just a lens, sensor, and rudimentary controls, and rely on an Android or iOS smartphone as a screen and sharing device. Update: Do not buy this! Read my hands-on review: Sony QX100 Lens Camera: Ruined … [Read more...] about Turn Your Smartphone Into A Serious Camera (For Real!)

Eye-Fi Workflow: Wireless Card Reader

July 5, 2011 By Stephen 2 Comments

The Eye-Fi card just can't handle transferring many large images. This is a serious limitation, since most of the promised functionality comes from the card's ability to automatically upload photos to the Eye-Fi View online service, Flickr, Facebook, and other sites. After trying in vain to get the card to function as expected, I gave up and disabled everything but "Direct … [Read more...] about Eye-Fi Workflow: Wireless Card Reader

Hands-On Review: The Eye-Fi Connect X2 Card

July 4, 2011 By Stephen 3 Comments

The Eye-Fi card holds serious promise and is a marvel of engineering and miniaturization. If only it worked. In my real-world test at Tech Field Day 6, the Eye-Fi proved frustrating, failing to live up to my expectations and showing serious flaws in design and execution. The Out-of-Box Experience For more information on the Eye-Fi card line-up, see Introducing the Eye-Fi X2 … [Read more...] about Hands-On Review: The Eye-Fi Connect X2 Card

What Are The True Eye-Fi X2 802.11n Wi-Fi Capabilities?

July 3, 2011 By Stephen 1 Comment

My experience with the Eye-Fi connected SD camera card has been frustrating, but I wasn't sure how much blame the company deserved. Uploading massive 14 megapixel photos is going to be slow over a 3G connection using any device, after all. But how fast could the Eye-Fi go on a really great wireless LAN? The company is skimpy with technical specs, but I did manage to figure out … [Read more...] about What Are The True Eye-Fi X2 802.11n Wi-Fi Capabilities?

Introducing the Eye-Fi X2 Card

June 20, 2011 By Stephen 1 Comment

One reason the smartphones like the iPhone are gaining ground on purpose-built cameras is their instant connectivity: Take a photo and you can immediately share it on Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, or other popular sites. Wouldn't it be great if your SLR or digital camera could do the same? This is the promise of the Eye-Fi card: It adds Wi-Fi connectivity to most popular cameras, … [Read more...] about Introducing the Eye-Fi X2 Card

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs…
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting…
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim…
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you…
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it.
