Building Virtual Infrastructure Seminar, Seattle WA

Two days after I present in Silicon Valley, I’ll be headed to Seattle for my next Building Virtual Infrastructure seminar. These all-day events presented by Truth in IT are a chance for end-users to learn more about next-generation servers, networks, and storage. After that, I’m headed to Seattle for another seminar date. I urge you to attend these events, whether in San Jose, Seattle, or any other future date!

As the seminars have progressed through the years, I’ve added more and more detail in areas where I get questions. This includes a lot more content around InfiniBand, solid-state storage, consolidated networking, Ethernet fabrics, and different types of hypervisors.

I’m also working on better illustrations of my ideas around simplification, consolidation, and the balance between new ideas and best practices in the enterprise data center. I like to challenge my audiences with new ideas, but I don’t expect them to Ross and implement untested technologies willy-nilly!

Faster Ethernet Gets Weird

“One size fits all” doesn’t work for Ethernet, but this proliferation of speed options sounds like trouble without automatic capability negotiation. It’s nice to have options, but the IEEE must remain focused on interoperability and rein in the interests of the various companies proposing next-generation Ethernet technologies.

My Advice For New Business Travelers: Get The Credit Cards!

New business travelers first should sign up for a preferred hotel and airline program and focus their travel dollars there. Then, they should get a Chase Sapphire card or American Express Platinum card to earn points on travel and transfer those points to the hotel or airline program for redemption. Finally, they should consider getting the co-branded credit card for their hotel chain and airline of choice.

Microsoft: Kill the Craptops Before They Destroy Windows!

Release after release, Microsoft pushes Windows forward. Yet the operating system is continually undermined by the “value-focused” low-end machines pushed by the majority of OEMs. This race to the bottom has tarnished Windows for a decade and now threatens to derail Windows 8. Microsoft must do something to stop the crap before it’s too late!
