This question is just as relevant today as when I first published this article in 2008!</p></div>
<p>Many storage challenges focus on correlating high-level uses of data (such as applications) with the nuts and bolts of storage infrastructure. These discussions often revolve around the conflict between <em>data management</em>, which demands an ever-smaller unit of management, and <em>storage management</em>, which benefits most from consolidation. Developing data management capability that is both granular enough for applications and scalable enough for storage is one key to the future of storage.</p>
<h3>Storage Management: Scaling Up</h3>
<p>As I discussed in a previous <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/tag/Sunday-series/"  target="_self">Sunday Series</a> piece, <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2008/09/14/turning-page-raid/"  target="_self"><em>Turning the Page on RAID</em></a>, the data storage industry has traditionally focused on reducing granularity. Disk capacity has expanded, and RAID technology has multiplied this by combining multiple physical drive mechanisms into a single virtual one. Storage virtualization technologies, from the SAN to the server, have also often been touted primarily as a mechanism to reduce heterogeneity. From a technical perspective, therefore, granularity has been an obstacle to overcome.</p>
<p>The core organizational best practice for storage management is the reduction of complexity and the enforcement of standardization. Consolidation of storage arrays and file servers is a common goal, as IT seeks to benefit from economies of scale. The goal of both initiatives is the creation of a storage utility or managed storage service. This mirrors efforts on the server and network sides to consolidate and virtualize hardware.</p>
<p>Although both technological and organizational factors have traditionally driven granularity out of storage, this does not have to be the case. Virtual pools of storage are ideal for providing storage on demand, as disk-focused RAID groups give way to more flexible sub-disk storage arrangements. And an operational focus on standardized storage service offerings has the potential to enable scalable management of these smaller units.</p>
<h3>Filing Service</h3>
<p>File-based protocols would seem to have more potential for granular storage management, but they have been undermined by the hierarchical nature of modern file storage. Whether the connection to a file server uses NFS, CIFS, or AFP, the key unit of management is actually the shared directory, not the file. All files in the share \\firefly\backups would be located on the same server and would be managed as a unit.</p>
<p>NAS virtualization can change this somewhat, as can more specialized NAS servers. Although Microsoft DFS enables consolidation and virtualization of NAS shares, it does not allow subdivision of shares below the directory level &#8211; all files in a directory must be placed on the same server. Tricks like stubbing and links allow for some movement, but these do not solve the core issue. Specialized virtual NAS devices from F5 (the ARX, nee Acopia), NetApp, BlueArc, Symantec, and others have the ability to move files individually, providing as much a virtualized storage environment as any block-focused enterprise array. Avere is also beginning to talk about granular file management.</p>
<p>But even an ideal virtualized file server lacks the kind of granularity demanded by users. They care about data, not files, and most applications consolidate their data storage into a few files. Consider a database, for example, where users want each record treated uniquely but storage devices see just a few much larger files. <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2008/09/28/we-need-storage-revolution/"  target="_self">We need a storage revolution</a>, where someone creates an ideal storage platform in which each individual record or object includes custom metadata and is managed independently. This would truly be a massive change, however, and it is not clear that all applications will follow the object storage model of Google and Amazon.</p>
<h3>Small is Beautiful</h3>
<p>Barring a revolution in data management, our best hope is to allow greater granularity in storage management. As mentioned above, virtualization technology has the potential to enable management and protection of any unit of storage, right down to the individual block or record. But the reality of storage virtualization has not matched its promise.</p>
<p>What is needed is greater integration. Each layer of virtualization (file system, volume manager, hypervisor, network, array, and RAID) also hides necessary details from lower layers. Consider the case of a virtual server snapshot: The application and filesystem must be in a quiesced state to allow a snapshot to be taken at the storage level, but the storage array has no intrinsic information about how its capacity is used. A given LUN might contain dozens of servers on a shared VMFS volume, so all must be snapped together.</p>
<p>Integration can be enabled by sharing more information through APIs. VMware leverages <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2008/07/28/storage-fixes-vmware-esx-server-35-update-2/"  target="_self">Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) integration for shared storage</a> so a VMFS snapshot can call the operating system and even applications (Windows Server 2003 only, for now) to prepare the data. Similarly, VSS can communicate directly with supported iSCSI and Fibre Channel arrays, calling a snapshot at the right moment. And Microsoft is, no doubt, enhancing VSS as we speak.</p>
<p>As virtualization technology matures, expect this type of integration to improve. We hope to see more APIs exposed by VMware and Microsoft, allowing communication up and down the stack to break through the information barrier. Imagine a future where a standard API like VSS can pass a message through VMware, Xen, and Hyper-V to the underlying storage array to initiate a snap. I predict that this kind of integration-enabled granularity is not too far off.</p>

<p>Do you use an &#8220;iTunes compatible&#8221; device like an Iomega ix4 or Drobo FS or Roku SoundBridge? Have you noticed that it no longer works since you updated to iTunes 10? That&#8217;s because Apple made a simple change to their Digital Audio Access Protocol (DAAP) that causes third-party devices to fail to connect correctly. Although software patches are already appearing, there is no guarantee that older devices like that Roku will ever be updated.</p>
<h3>DAAP, Firefly, and iTunes Clients</h3>
<p>Apple introduced &#8220;music sharing&#8221; over a network in version 4.0 of iTunes way back in 2003, and third-party devices have been trying to play along ever since. Digital Audio Access Protocol (DAAP) was based on http and xml and leverages zeroconf/Bonjour to discover and stream audio across a network. iTunes can act as both a server or client.</p>
<p>Although Apple only licensed the protocol to a select few client applications, DAAP was successfully reverse-engineered shortly after its debut and integrated into a number of third-party clients and servers. Apple has continually modified DAAP for almost a decade, adding MD5-based and proprietary authentication in versions 4.2 and 4.5, but this has not stopped third-party servers like the open-source Firefly/mt-daapd from serving as an iTunes server.</p>
<p>Apple was successful in preventing third-party clients from accessing music through iTunes, adding a client validation challenge to version 7.0 that has not yet been broken. This allowed them to limit client access to only those few third parties who paid for a license, including the Roku SoundBridge that I own.</p>
<h3>No More Servers?</h3>

<p>Since it was open source and capable of supporting iTunes, the Firefly Media Server (formerly called mt-daapd) has seen widespread use in &#8220;home media servers&#8221; like the Iomega ix4 and Drobo FS. Just about every home NAS that supports iTunes uses this software or a related fork, and just about every one stopped working with the release of iTunes 10.</p>
<p>As of version 10, when iTunes requests a list of songs, it requires the server to respond with a correct &#8220;mediakind&#8221; response. <a rel="nofollow" href="http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12235486"  target="_blank">Previous versions apparently assumed type 1 (music)</a> whenever this was missing, but iTunes 10 simply refuses to play, reporting odd error messages like &#8220;untitled playlist.&#8221; So <a href="http://blogs.computerworld.com/16895/itunes_10_blunder_raises_the_temperature"  target="_blank">Apple has broken iTunes compatibility</a>. Again.</p>
<p>A patch is ready for some versions of mt-daapd, but a more important question is raised: Should commercial products rely on reverse-engineered protocols like DAAP? Much of the Apple ecosystem is reliant on reverse engineering, from <a href="http://www.ladyada.net/make/mintyboost/icharge.html"  target="_blank">iPod chargers</a> to <a href="http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=41&amp;t=1081535&amp;p=19788989#p19788989"  target="_blank">AFP</a> to <a href="http://www.kremalicious.com/2008/06/ubuntu-as-mac-file-server-and-time-machine-volume/"  target="_blank">Time Machine</a>. Many of the resulting &#8220;tricks&#8221; are commercialized in a wide variety of products from manufacturers small and large. Even IT titans like <a href="http://www.zatznotfunny.com/2009-04/hp-mediasmart-server-time-machine-fine-print/"  target="_blank">HP</a> and <a href="http://download.iomega.com/resources/nas_ix4_datasheet.pdf"  target="_blank">EMC</a> advertise Apple support based on reverse-engineered protocols!</p>
<h3>Stephen&#8217;s Stance</h3>

<p>In <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2010/04/06/drobo-fs-nas-review/"  target="_blank">my review of the Drobo FS</a>, I questioned the wisdom of relying on &#8220;<a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2007/07/27/making-the-switch-to-digital-music-at-home/"  target="_blank">buggy and limited software</a>&#8221; and discussed my use of &#8220;a real iTunes instance on my always-running iMac.&#8221; My experience with a Linksys NSLU2 running Firefly was never positive. Even <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2007/11/03/another-roku-soundbridge/"  target="_blank">my two Roku SoundBridge clients</a> don&#8217;t work very well, and they&#8217;re licensed! I&#8217;m much happier with the performance of my AirPort Express, even though it would be nice if Apple would <a rel="nofollow" href="http://gizmodo.com/5599836/has-apple-forgotten-about-its-remote-app"  target="_blank">update the Remote app</a> for the iPhone!</p>
<p>Many people complain about Apple&#8217;s &#8220;walled garden&#8221; approach, and I think they have a point when it comes to protocols like DAAP. By not allowing third parties to develop compatible hardware and software, they&#8217;ve forced everyone underground. Now that they&#8217;ve changed their implementation, all of these devices are &#8220;broken&#8221; in the eyes of users. Some, like the Roku, are out of date and might never be updated.</p>
<p>This is typical Apple. Out with the old and in with the new. They did the same with their own Apple TV hardware this month, <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.macrumors.com/2010/09/02/apple-confirms-no-software-update-for-original-apple-tv/"  target="_blank">stranding</a> the few buyers it found without an update. Some may suggest that this minor change to iTunes is a <a rel="nofollow" href="http://gizmodo.com/5634087/forget-apple-tv-airplay-is-apples-sneak-attack-on-television"  target="_blank">conspiracy to push AirPlay</a>, but I imagine it&#8217;s a simple case of upgrade-itis. Who cares about all that old junk when all this pretty new hardware and software is available?</p>
<p>We really can&#8217;t blame Apple for this. They never allowed the DAAP protocol to be used, and never promised that these reverse-engineered servers would work. In fact, I wonder why they even allowed &#8220;iTunes compatibility&#8221; to be promised without licensing. Perhaps some of the larger companies have Apple licenses, but I doubt it. At the end of the day, it is these vendors who are responsible for promising compatibility that they could not hope to deliver.</p>
<p><em>Note: The Roku SoundBridge still works fine as a client with iTunes 10. To clarify, I was saying that Apple could break this functionality in the future and Roku would be unlikely to fix it since they seem to have abandoned this product line.</em></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Why does network-attached storage (NAS) have such a poor reputation?</strong> This isn&#8217;t what the vendors want to be talking about, but some recent product announcements and discussions led to this thought. IT folks as a whole don&#8217;t trust NAS for real work, and 20 years of effort from big names like Sun, Microsoft, NetApp, IBM, and the rest hasn&#8217;t changed that.</p>
<h3>Fear</h3>
<p>Back when I used to teach the &#8220;Storage 101&#8243; session at Storage Decisions, I was consistently amazed to find little awareness of enterprise NAS systems. People complained about LUNs and Fibre Channel but when I suggested using <a rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_File_System_(protocol)"  target="_blank">NFS</a> or <a rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Message_Block"  target="_blank">SMB</a> their heads almost exploded. <strong>&#8220;We would never use that for application storage,&#8221; they shouted. &#8220;File servers are for home directories, not data center stuff!&#8221;</strong> Clearly, NAS faces an uphill battle.</p>
<p>In a recent piece I wrote, I referred to what I consider to be <strong>the prime best practice: Use the right tool for the job</strong>. It&#8217;s a simple statement, and one that resonates beyond IT and the technology world. But it can be devilishly difficult to see what the right tool is sometimes. Why not use NAS for virtual machine storage? NetApp has been beating that drum for years, yet NAS has a very small footprint in VMware. How about databases on NFS? Exchange over SMB? Block storage has a massive lead over NAS in all of these areas.</p>

<p>IT folks seem downright fearful of file-level storage protocols. Has NFS really burned them that badly over the decades? Can SMB/CIFS really be as bad as they think?</p>
<h3>Loathing</h3>
<p>I wonder if this terror has more to do with the products people have used than the fundamental concept of file services. <strong>Many NAS servers (and clients) are barely functional</strong>. Sadly, NFS and SMB are easy to get 80% right, but the 20% corner case interaction takes decades to overcome. My daily storage consulting work exposes me to a myriad of NAS configurations, and few of the multi-platform combinations end well.</p>
<blockquote><p>Note: Although it has long been known by a variety of names, <strong>the Windows NAS protocol is currently called Server Message Block or SMB</strong>. Common Internet File System (CIFS) was a failed mid-1990&#8242;s attempt by Microsoft to make this protocol standard on the Internet.</p></blockquote>
<p>Consider the Mac. Apple added <a rel="nofollow" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1568"  target="_blank">an SMB client</a> to OS X in 2001 but, despite many updates, it is far from reliable. <strong>Mac users in general loathe connecting to Windows file servers</strong>, and business users have located numerous bugs in the handling of Mac-specific file types. It&#8217;s bad enough that one company, GroupLogic, created an entire <a href="http://www.grouplogic.com/products/extremeZ-IP/"  target="_blank">AFP server for Windows</a> just to solve these tricky issues.</p>
<p>This situation often happens in reverse, too. <strong>Windows admins are justifiably cautious when deploying non-Windows SMB servers</strong>, whether software (Samba, Novell, etc) or system (NetApp, Celerra, BlueArc, etc). As a very early NetApp user, I watched their CIFS/SMB server evolve over a decade and a half into a fairly robust solution, but the early years were downright painful.</p>
<p>Lest you throw rocks at Redmond, know that SMB is not alone with functionality problems. The interoperability of NFS servers and clients is a bit better thanks to open(ish) standards and open source implementations, but its reputation is just as bad. And Apple&#8217;s proprietary <a rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Filing_Protocol"  target="_blank">AFP</a> protocol is downright notorious.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been there myself many times. I tried to set up a home server based on open source software (Linux, FreeBSD, <a href="http://www.samba.org/"  target="_blank">Samba</a>, <a rel="nofollow" href="http://netatalk.sourceforge.net/"  target="_blank">Netatalk</a>, etc) but <strong>rejected it outright</strong> after many frustrating years. Today I use a Mac Mini for file sharing in OS X and serving iTunes music and movies (goodbye, <a href="http://www.fireflymediaserver.org/"  target="_blank">Firefly</a>!) And years of fighting with Samba in enterprise environments taught me two things: <strong>It&#8217;s possible to get it running well with Windows clients but it&#8217;s astonishingly easy to get it wrong</strong>.</p>
<h3>Enterprise NAS?</h3>
<p>We all know that <strong>interoperability is devilishly difficult</strong>. I don&#8217;t envy the NetApp and EMC engineers that have to tweak and tune their server for every possible client, bugs and all. And I am impressed that, after probably millions of man-hours of work, they were able to come up with something stable for a subset of use cases. But this just makes me even more cautious about third-party NAS servers.</p>
<p>I talk to storage vendors all the time, and many of their new products support NFS and SMB. But <strong>my internal alarms start going off when I hear about these products</strong>. There are two simple reasons for this:</p>
<ol>
<li>As mentioned above, <strong>NAS is rare in primary data center applications</strong>. It may be common for user files (euphemistically called &#8220;unstructured data&#8221;) and certain distributed applications (simulation, rendering, etc), but most use cases still call for block SCSI (FC/iSCSI) storage.</li>
<li>As further mentioned, <strong>getting NAS right takes a massive amount of effort</strong>. New and small vendors tend to slap Samba on their (Linux-based) box and call it a day. This is very, very far from being sufficient for enterprise use.</li>
</ol>
<p>This is why <strong>I usually ignore NAS functionality in storage systems except for long-tenured and deep-pocketed vendors</strong>. Although the world is turning to &#8220;Unified Storage&#8221; and multi-protocol support, I&#8217;m focusing primarily on block (SCSI) and cloud (REST) capability because the former has proven somewhat easier than NAS to get working and the latter is both simple and &#8220;green field&#8221; with no legacy concerns.</p>

<p>EMC&#8217;s Iomega unit today released the 12-drive rack-mount storage product we have all been waiting for. It was never a question of whether Iomega <em>could</em> produce such a beast: The EMC LifeLine software and Iomega hardware were definitely <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2009/01/07/emc-iomega-relevant/"  target="_blank">up for it</a>. The question was always if EMC <em>would</em> direct Iomega to fill the gaping hole in their storage lineup between the 4-drive ix4-200r and the entry-business AX4 arrays. <a href="http://go.iomega.com/en-us/products/network-storage-rack/ix12-300r/ix12-300r/"  target="_blank">The new ix12-300r</a> packs 12 drive bays, scaling from 4 TB all the way to 24 TB, and backs it with quad gigabit iSCSI, redundant power, and everything else the small data center needs.</p>
<h3>Stepping Up</h3>
<p>The ix12 is a big step up. Although they sold multi-drive RAID systems even before the EMC acquisition, <strong>this new device is unlike anything we&#8217;ve seen before from Iomega</strong>. This slim (2U) chassis is all drives up front, with 12 hot-swap slots full of 3.5&#8243; SATA storage. Under the hood is a dual-core 3 GHz Intel Core2duo E8400 &#8220;<a rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfdale_(microprocessor)#Wolfdale"  target="_blank">Wolfdale</a>&#8221; CPU, a major horsepower upgrade from the single-core Celeron in the ix4-200r. It also has double the memory (2 GB) compared to <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2009/04/16/iomega-storcenter-ix4-200r/"  target="_blank">that 4-drive product</a>.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re concerned about performance after trying out a desktop ix4-200d, you needn&#8217;t worry. <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2009/08/27/iomega-ix4-200d/"  target="_blank">The desktop unit</a> has a lowly 1.2 GHz Marvell 6281 and just 512 MB of RAM. While this might be enough for a desktop user, it could never handle the pounding of servers in a shared networked configuration. The ix4-200r, with its 3.2 GHz Intel Celeron D 352 &#8220;<a rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_4#Cedar_Mill"  target="_blank">Cedar Mill</a>&#8220;, offered much better performance even though its name was just one letter different. And the ix12&#8242;s CPU is <strong>three times faster still</strong>, though it remains a single-controller system.</p>
<p>More significant changes lurk around the back of the ix12. Dual redundant power supplies, a frequent request in this class, and variable-speed fans, surround <strong>four Ethernet ports</strong>. Each sports gigabit speed and the set supports Microsoft Windows MPIO, can be aggregated with 802.3ad, or used in VLAN configurations with up to 4 VLAN tags per port. The ix12 speaks just about every language, from NFS and SMB to AFP and iSCSI, and now adds WebDAV and DFS support, too.</p>
<p>A few limitations separate this new ix12 device from its enterprise-grade brothers, however. As noted, a <strong>single controller</strong> manages all access, so redundancy and parallel processing are limited. Although the ix12 sports 12 drive bays, it only has <strong>four SATA channels</strong> internally; each bay shares a channel with two others using SATA expanders. Don&#8217;t expect to push wire speed over all four Ethernet ports at once, even with all this newfound CPU power.</p>
<h3>A Wall of Drives</h3>
<p>Base ix12s ship with 4 drives installed, but we were disappointed to learn that <strong>additional drives must be purchased in 4-disk packs from Iomega</strong>. Although this decision is understandable, the ix series remains a holdout amid growing legions of bring-your-own-drive competitors. At least the company supports mixing and matching drive sizes, including 1 TB and 2 TB at present. We suspect that the unit uses the same reliable 5900 rpm Seagate Barracuda LP drives as the ix4-200d.</p>
<p>Iomega added a few tricks to the LifeLine software to take advantage of a possible 12 drives installed. First up is the addition of <strong>dual-parity RAID-6</strong> for improved data protection. The company (and this reviewer) suggest this over RAID-5 once more than 5 drives are combined in one set. Don&#8217;t worry, though, because RAID configuration can be changed online and any unused drive can be used regardless of its location in the array. The ix12 also adds <strong>drive spindown</strong>, saving power when the RAID set isn&#8217;t in use.</p>
<p>Like the ix4, any portion of a RAID set can be carved out into an iSCSI LUN for Ethernet-connected hosts. Iomega claims that LUN provisioning times have improved with the added horsepower and software tweaks, and we hope this is true. A maximum of 256 LUNs can be configured in this way, though even 12 drives are unlikely to drive much performance to that many storage users.</p>
<h3>Where to Use It?</h3>
<p>Although not listed yet, Iomega promises that the ix12 will have a place on the <strong>Exchange ESRP</strong>, <strong>Windows Server and Hyper-V</strong> logo list, and <strong>VMware Compatibility Guide</strong> this month. It&#8217;s already the first Iomega product to be &#8220;<a href="http://www.emc.com/products/interoperability/elab.htm"  target="_blank">EMC E-Lab</a> Tested&#8221;, meaning it is on the <strong>EMC Support Matrix</strong>; this fact alone speaks volumes of EMC&#8217;s expectations for the unit. My own experience shows that Iomega iSCSI is fine for smaller VMware and Hyper-V deployments.</p>
<p>Clearly, the ix12 is a new kind of Iomega array. If the 200d and 200r were a sign that the company wanted to <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2009/04/16/iomega-storcenter-ix4-200r/"  target="_blank">move out of the house</a>, the ix12 is a demonstration that they have graduated. Starting at US $5,000, the ix12 is all business and its resume ought to impress in interviews. It can&#8217;t quite boast the scalability and redundancy of established arrays (including its brothers from EMC), but it ought to be an easy acquisition for companies looking for a little more storage here or there.</p>
<p>One is left with questions, though: <strong>How big will EMC let Iomega get?</strong> If 12 drives are acceptable, what about 24? Is SAS off limits? What about 10 Gigabit Ethernet and even Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) eventually? Can we dream of dual controllers? At some point, the Iomega lineup could even threaten the CLARiiON!</p>
<p>Then there is the competitive landscape. Iomega leapfrogged the 8-drive <strong>Data Robotics</strong> lineup and landed squarely in competition with the likes of the revitalized <strong>Overland Storage</strong> but at a much lower price. We also have <strong>Netgear</strong>, <strong>HP</strong>, <strong>Dell</strong>, and <strong>Promise</strong>, and there is an attractive <strong>D-Link</strong> box packing 15 drives and 10 GbE. Iomega also has to worry about its own big brother, the <strong>Dell/EMC AX4</strong>, starting around $12k. It&#8217;s a competitive market, and Iomega is in for a fight as even more vendors wake up to the possibilities in this market.</p>

<p><strong>Iomega is well into its second coming as </strong><a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2009/01/07/emc-iomega-relevant/"  target="_blank"><strong>EMC&#8217;s entry-level storage division</strong></a>. First, they applied EMC&#8217;s compact and full-featured LifeLine home storage software to existing gear, giving birth to the Home Media Network Hard Drive, StorCenter ix2, and <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2009/02/05/emc-lifeline-storcenter-pro-ix4-100/"  target="_blank">StorCenter Pro ix4-100</a>. Then they wooed the small-business community with the rack-mount <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2009/04/16/iomega-storcenter-ix4-200r/"  target="_blank">StorCenter ix4-200r</a>, adding iSCSI target support and VMware compatibility.</p>
<p>Today, they are back with the new<strong> ix4-200d, probably Iomega&#8217;s best product yet</strong>. It includes every feature of the rack-mount ix4-200r, including NAS and iSCSI target mode plus great new stuff like one-touch synchronization. All of this is packaged in a Drobo-like desktop system with a starting list price of just $700, or <strong>less than half the cost of a comparable ix4-200r</strong>!<span id="more-2246"></span></p>
<h3>Desktop Storage</h3>
<p>External desktop storage products, exemplified by Western Digital&#8217;s wildly successful My Book series, have been a huge retail hit. Priced just over $100, these drives pack a terabyte or more and offer plug and play simplicity. I recently visited a small business with a WD or Seagate USB enclosure on every single desk. I&#8217;ve purchased five USB- or FireWire-connected hard drives myself over the last two years!</p>
<p>But these<strong> single-drive desktop wonders are a disaster waiting to happen</strong>:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>They fail frequently</strong> (like my Maxtor 3200), instantly wiping out the data they contained</li>
<li><strong>They are targets for thieves</strong>, so data loss prevention (DLP) experts warn against their use</li>
<li><strong>They aren&#8217;t shareable</strong> natively, so most people resort to <a rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sneakernet"  target="_blank">sneakernet</a> swapping rather than fight with Windows to present them as a network share</li>
<li><strong>When they&#8217;re full, they&#8217;re full</strong>, forcing the purchase of a whole new drive</li>
</ul>
<p>Many vendors sell <strong>grown-up versions that address some or all of these concerns with multiple drives, network connections, and encryption</strong>, but these have been slow to catch on. Since they contain redundant drives and extra hardware and software, they are much more expensive than their little cousins. Iomega has done battle in this arena with their original StorCenter ix2 and the ix4-100, but these have yet to catch on. Even <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/series/drobo/"  target="_blank">Drobo</a>, with their fanatical user-friendly focus, has failed to convince many buyers.</p>
<p>Then there is the world of business storage. Way down at the bottom of the enterprise storage pyramid lies the realm of small 4- and 8-drive storage arrays. <strong>These SMB storage arrays offer a lot of capacity and reliability for the money</strong> but very little in the way of features. Iomega&#8217;s StorCenter Pro ix4-200r, in contrast, wowed the techies with a full iSCSI target stack that was certified for VMware ESX. But the price, over $1500, definitely limited sales to the home hobbyist.</p>
<h3>&#8220;Just Right&#8221; Storage</h3>
<p>Although the name is similar to the StorCenter Pro ix4-200r launched this Spring, Iomega went back to the drawing board for the ix4-200d. They built an entirely new device that could offer the impressive features of their StorCenter Pro line at a price closer to consumer storage offerings. The result<strong> boasts everything the Pro has and more at less than half the price</strong>:</p>
<ul>
<li>You want connectivity? The ix4 sports <strong>dual gigabit Ethernet ports</strong> that can be teamed up for performance or split off for redundancy.</li>
<li>You want NAS? The ix4 supports <strong>NFS, SMB, and even Apple&#8217;s AFP</strong>, plus it&#8217;s Active Directory compatible.</li>
<li>How about iSCSI? It&#8217;s <strong>a full-featured iSCSI target</strong>, <a href="http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/item.aspx?idItem=79b37f1b-29e3-225a-7dd8-2ee6fcf6e315&amp;bCatID=1282"  target="_blank">certified</a> for Microsoft Server 2003 and 2008.</li>
<li>Want to host virtual machines? The ix4 is <strong><a href="http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?action=search&amp;deviceCategory=san&amp;productId=1&amp;advancedORbasic=advanced&amp;maxDisplayRows=50&amp;key=ix4-200d&amp;release%5B%5D=-1&amp;datePosted=-1&amp;partnerId%5B%5D=-1&amp;arrayTypeId%5B%5D=-1&amp;rorre=0"  target="_blank">certified</a> with VMware</strong> ESX 4 vSphere using both NFS and iSCSI, <a href="http://hcl.xensource.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductType=Storage&amp;ProductName=ix4-200+Series"  target="_blank">on the Xen HCL</a>, and that Microsoft logo means it will work with Hyper-V as well.</li>
<li>Need backup? The ix4 comes with <strong>EMC&#8217;s Retrospect</strong> and supports <strong>OS X Time Machine</strong> over AFP just like an Apple Time Capsule.</li>
<li>Looking for weird features? How about support for up to 5 Axis network cameras, BlueTooth Picture Transfer Protocol, and UPnP/DLNA media service!</li>
<li>Iomega also added a new feature, <strong>QuickTransfer</strong>, to synchronize files between devices.</li>
</ul>
<p>This is one seriously feature-rich storage system. In fact, <strong>this glut of features is the ix4&#8242;s Achilles heel</strong>: How do you effectively communicate the value of a device that does so much? Most of the buying public has never heard of most of these features, so the price remains hard for some to justify.</p>

<p>Another hurdle for the ix4 is Iomega&#8217;s decision to fill it with hard drives. <strong>One cannot buy an empty ix4-200d, and both the 2 TB and 4 TB configurations come loaded with four hard disk drives</strong>. This raises the price of entry and scares off the very techies who might be interested in the device. The majority of Drobos are purchased with no drives at all, and storage geeks like me love the idea that disks can be added as-needed in the future. Although Iomega is open to users swapping out the drives in their own StorCenter device, this is not its intended use case. <strong>Iomega&#8217;s decision to sell the ix4-200d as a loaded appliance seems counter to the price sensitivity and flexibility needs of buyers</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>QuickTransfer: Data Synchronization for Everything</strong></p>
<p>One nifty new feature included with the ix4-200d is QuickTransfer, a one-touch data synchronization capability. Leveraging rsync technology, but hiding this complexity with a more-friendly wizard-based GUI, <strong>QuickTransfer allows users to set up synchronization jobs between the ix4 and a variety of targets</strong>:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>USB drives</strong> can be plugged into one of the three USB 2.0 ports and synchronized with a subset of the content of the ix4. For example, a portable USB drive could be &#8220;recharged&#8221; with the latest set of data before one heads out of the office.</li>
<li>Two Iomega ix4&#8242;s, or other <strong>NAS systems</strong> for that matter, can be synchronized over the Ethernet/IP LAN. This would provide a robust and bandwidth-friendly remote office backup or data replication solution.</li>
<li>A <strong>PC or Mac</strong> can also be synchronized over a network share, providing a simple alternative to the bundled backup software.</li>
</ul>
<p>QuickTransfer is exclusive to the ix4-200d for now, but Iomega assured me that it would be included in future StorCenter products and added to the StorCenter Pro ix4-200r in the near future. It is unknown if or when other existing StorCenter devices will get QuickTransfer, however.</p>
<h3>Iomega&#8217;s Next Move</h3>
<p>What will Iomega do next? They must be ready to announce their <a href="http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?action=search&amp;deviceCategory=san&amp;productId=1&amp;advancedORbasic=advanced&amp;maxDisplayRows=50&amp;key=ix4-200d&amp;release%5B%5D=-1&amp;datePosted=-1&amp;partnerId%5B%5D=-1&amp;arrayTypeId%5B%5D=-1&amp;rorre=0"  target="_blank">vSphere 4</a> and <a href="http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/item.aspx?idItem=79b37f1b-29e3-225a-7dd8-2ee6fcf6e315&amp;bCatID=1282"  target="_blank">Microsoft Windows Server</a> certification soon, since both company&#8217;s web sites already list the device in their compatibility lists. Iomega ought to try to take advantage of the interest among VMware users with a big <strong>VMworld</strong> splash. They will be there, but it is awfully hard to get noticed at such a large event. I am looking forward to the event to get a hands-on test.</p>
<p>The ix4 should begin showing up <strong>for sale at online stores</strong> very quickly. Amazon listed the rackmount product within days of its release, and we expect the same this time. But will Iomega offer this cheaper device in retail stores? It would be great to have it available at Staples and Best Buy, but shelf space for a storage system this expensive would be hard to get. Instead, expect it at specialty outlets like Fry&#8217;s and perhaps Micro Center.</p>
<p>How much does the StorCenter ix4-200d cost?</p>
<ul>
<li>The 2 TB model (SKU# 34546 with four 500 GB drives) lists at $699.99</li>
<li>The 4 TB model (SKU# 34549 with four 1 TB drives) lists at $899.99</li>
<li>The 8 TB model (SKU# 34563 with four 2 TB drives) lists at $1,899.99</li>
</ul>
<p>It also seems likely that <strong>the 2-bay product is up for a refresh</strong> in the near future. The ix2 can&#8217;t be said to be very attractive, so hopefully the company will do something about this with the next-generation product. It is unclear whether the inexpensive 2-bay device will get iSCSI support, but I suspect it will. Beyond this, might Iomega move further upmarket with <strong>an 8-drive unit</strong>? We shall see!</p>

It&#8217;s generating buzz (DroboPro was the number one trend on Twitter for a while on Tuesday) but is it deserving? In a word, yes. But I&#8217;m still not going to buy one!</p>
<h3 class="post-subhead">The Drobo for Pros</h3>
<p>Just as in Apple&#8217;s Mac and MacBook lineup, <strong>the &#8220;Pro&#8221; name denotes more of everything for the pro user or small business</strong>. The most obvious addition is four more drive slots, bringing maximum capacity up to eight 2 TB drives or a solid 16 TB of raw storage. Mix in data protection with Drobo&#8217;s unique BeyondRAID and subtract disk drive &#8220;liars inches&#8221;, and you&#8217;re left with 10.9 or 12.5 TB of usable capacity.<span id="more-1692"></span></p>
<p>The difference in potential usable capacity is another Pro feature &#8211; optional <strong>protection from double drive failure</strong>. Nice! Users might be tempted to turn off this RAID-6-ish double parity protection in order to gain a little extra space, but I&#8217;d strongly suggest against that. With 8 drives spinning, the system is bound to eat a drive now and then, and good old Murphy&#8217;s Law (or the notorious bathtub curve of drive failures) is sure to spell doom for your data without extra protection. I suppose single-drive protection is acceptable for a 4-drive unit, but eight drives drives the risk of loss unacceptably high.</p>
<p>Around back is another major surprise: A gigabit Ethernet port. No, the Drobo Pro doesn&#8217;t incorporate the DroboShare&#8217;s NAS technology. Instead, the company added a <strong>simple and speedy iSCSI</strong> stack, bringing some serious performance potential to &#8220;the little drive array that could.&#8221; The company says that a gigabit iSCSI connection pushes nearly 80 MB/s, easily tripling the throughput of the system&#8217;s FireWire 800 or USB ports.</p>

<p>PC owners might be put off by the lack of an eSATA port, but they would be wise to use iSCSI instead. Warning: Watch out for the limited performance of low-end gigabit Ethernet switches! Just about any iSCSI initiator ought to be able to connect to the Drobo, and <strong>Windows users will happily use Microsoft&#8217;s solid and free software</strong> to connect. But iSCSI on the Mac is another matter, and Drobo dropped a bombshell here: They cooked up their own <strong>simple software iSCSI initiator for OS X</strong> and are offering it free to all! This is shout-out-loud news since functional OS X iSCSI software costs hundreds of dollars from other vendors and <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2009/03/18/snow-leopard-iscsi/"  target="_blank">Apple&#8217;s built-in Leopard iSCSI support</a> is AWOL even in the latest Snow Leopard builds.</p>
<p>On the software side, <strong>Drobo remains amazingly simple to configure</strong>. You won&#8217;t find even a dozen buttons in the management interface, and no tuning or configuration is required. The software continues Drobo&#8217;s tradition of presenting all attached storage as a 16 TB drive, regardless of how much is really installed. This means that capacity can grow and shrink as drives are hot-swapped in and out without the connected server even noticing. The Pro does add one new trick: You can tell it to present up to 16 of these fibbing drives to the attached server if you&#8217;d like to segment your data a bit. Pro owners can also disable drive spin-down for server use.</p>
<p>Drobo is positioning the Pro model as the perfect small business storage system, and I certainly wouldn&#8217;t hesitate to recommend it as bulletproof small-office storage. By far, <strong>DroboPro is the simplest storage device to manage, expand, maintain, and install</strong>. It&#8217;s cheap compared to other 8-drive RAID systems at $1200 empty and can grow to meet the needs of a dozen folks, or one especially productive one, with ease. Connect a Drobo Pro to your Mac Pro and you&#8217;ll grin like a little girl who just got her very own pony!</p>
<h3 class="post-subhead">No Drobo For Me</h3>
<p>Although I love DroboPro even more than <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2008/07/08/drobo-2-apple-doesnt-fall-far-from-the-tree/"  target="_blank">Drobo classic</a>, it&#8217;s not for me. DroboPro is exactly what the majority of folks need, but its intentional simplicity means that it wouldn&#8217;t work in <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2008/01/14/the-drobo-of-my-dreams/"  target="_blank">my home office environment</a>.</p>
<p>You see, <strong>Drobo can still only be connected to a single computer</strong>. Although the Pro unit sports a total of four ports on the back (two FireWire 800, one USB 2.0, and the gigabit Ethernet), users must pick one and ignore the rest. Even the iSCSI support is limited to serving up a single target. This is not a home SAN. It&#8217;s not even suitable as a Time Machine target for two Macs.</p>
<p>Yes, you can share the capacity of a Drobo with NFS, SMB, or AFP using a computer or DroboShare, but that&#8217;s not what techies like me want. We want to share its storage directly among a few computers, something the Drobo Pro teases with its iSCSI support but refuses to deliver. And don&#8217;t be fooled: The second FireWire port is for daisy-chaining other FireWire devices, not connecting multiple systems.</p>
<p>Do you want to support a mail server and a file server in your small office? Buy two Drobos or combine them into a single computer. But I&#8217;m not going to do this at home. Data Robotics also hasn&#8217;t yet logo-qualified the Drobo Pro for Windows but it worked fine in their demo. I&#8217;d love to see ESX and Hyper-V qualification, too!</p>
<p>Finally, note that <strong>not all of these features are trickling down to the 4-bay Drobo</strong>. It is obviously not iSCSI-capable, since it lacks both the gigabit Ethernet port and dual-core processing muscle of its big brother. Dual-drive data protection, drive spin-down disable, and multi-volume capability are missing as well, though I&#8217;d love to see the latter especially.</p>
<p>Despite these limitations, <strong>I would not hesitate to recommend Drobo and DroboPro as the best simple storage available</strong>.</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><em>This is part of an ongoing </em><a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/tag/Sunday-series/"  target="_self"><em>series of longer articles I will be posting every Sunday</em></a><em> as part of an experiment in offering more in-depth content.</em></p>
<p>Along with my professional focus on enterprise storage systems, I&#8217;m enamored of home networking, and recently passed the three terabyte mark at home! This got me thinking about where home storage is heading.</p>
<p>As you can see in the photo, my office closet is overflowing with computer equipment (and one sweet guitar), but my data storage is much better organized. I have a <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2007/11/03/another-roku-soundbridge/"  target="_self">hacked Linksys NSLU2</a> with 500 GB as a file server, a <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2007/11/29/terabytes-on-the-cheap/"  target="_self">500 GB PC backup disk</a>, a 160 GB <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2008/07/26/move-os-x-time-machine-backups-new-disk/"  target="_self">Time Machine disk</a>, 1 TB of TiVo storage, and the rest. But wouldn&#8217;t it be nice if this could all be combined into some kind of super home server?</p>
<p><span id="more-616"></span></p>
<p><strong>Past Failures: Home Servers</strong></p>
<p>Home storage appliances and servers have come and gone over the year, with none seeming to make much of a mark. The market remains littered with UPNP media servers and home NAS boxes dashed on the shoals of an unappreciative public. Nearly every home network device company has produced one or two home storage servers, none of which have succeeded. Although I use a Linksys NSLU2 at home, I had to hack its Linux software and completely replace Linksys&#8217; features to create a useful device! The un-hacked NAS devices of Buffalo, Western Digital, Netgear, and the rest have generally failed to find buyers as well. So far, consumers seem content with simple USB and FireWire external drives.</p>
<p>The most adventurous home storage servers came from <a href="http://www.zetera.com/"  target="_blank">Zetera</a> and <a href="http://www.ximeta.com/web/products/"  target="_blank">Ximeta</a>, both of whom relied on proprietary IP SAN protocols. Note that these were SAN products, sharing block storage over Ethernet, rather than conventional NAS solutions. Both required drivers, limiting client support. The one Zetera buyer I know was pleased by the performance but never used the device as anything but a large hard drive for one PC.</p>

<p>Then there is Microsoft. Recall that the latest Windows Home Server is only their latest attempt to enter this market, and yet I know of no one who has adopted the device. The same can be said of the various media center servers from Microsoft and others. At this point, it seems likely that the future of home storage servers will not come from Microsoft, though their two XBox generations have <a href="http://www.zatznotfunny.com/2008-09/cross-platform-xbmc-media-center-beta-released/"  target="_blank">great potential as clients</a>.</p>
<p>Even EMC has entered the market with their nifty (but largely unnoticed) <a href="http://www.emc.com/lifeline"  target="_blank">LifeLine</a> product and <a href="http://store.iomega.com/"  target="_blank">Iomega</a> acquisition. Supporting file services and backup for computers as well as audio and video for media players, EMC positions LifeLine much like their Retrospect backup product, but goes further in offering a complete software solution for hardware OEMs wanting to offer a non-Windows home server. Although <a rel="nofollow" href="http://thestorageanarchist.typepad.com/weblog/2008/07/1016-emc-lifeli.html"  target="_blank">an impressive offering</a>, it is too early to tell if EMC will have much success with this product.</p>
<p><strong>The Sleek, Shiny Elephant in the Living Room</strong></p>
<p>Of course, there is one company that sells media players and servers by the bushel, complete with sleek, shiny interfaces. Apple&#8217;s tremendous success with the iPod has led to their iTunes software becoming the <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2008/01/14/i-buy-cds-but-i-dont-listen-to-them/"  target="_self">dominant media organization platform</a>, complete with its own proprietary discovery and sharing protocol. Now, with the Apple TV and video iPods, the company is broadening into more media categories. Surely their dominance here puts them in a special position when it comes to setting the stage for a home server or storage revolution.</p>
<p>They also have a strong position in the world of dedicated home storage. Their Airport products are among the only routers to be widely implemented with shared storage. Although many other companies offer similar products, low customer understanding means that these functions are not widely used. And the new Time Capsule device is surely already the most widely-used home NAS product.</p>
<p>But Apple has not yet shown any home server strategy. Administering multiple iTunes servers can be frustrating for users, with no inter-iTunes synchronization or centralization capability. Although the Mac Mini, Apple TV, or Time Capsule could certainly be seen as a home server, the company does not position them as such in the market. Indeed, some iTunes users like myself rely on compatible third party media servers like Firefly and TwonkyVision rather than using iTunes itself. Still, <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/09/22/what-is-the-brick"  target="_blank">rumors of an Apple home server persist</a>.</p>
<p>One issue for Apple is their reliance on proprietary protocols. Although the Bonjour discovery protocol is certainly simpler than UPnP in practice, Apple stands alone in relying on it. They also steadfastly stick to AFP for NAS and DAAP for remote media streaming. This limits the number of third-party clients and servers that can be used with their hardware and software.</p>
<p><strong>The Future is Friendly</strong></p>
<p>Although Apple has not yet tipped a home storage strategy beyond Time Capsule and Airport Extreme, they are best positioned to deliver a real home storage solution. A simple step would be to create an iTunes media server integrated with Time Capsule and add client/server media synchronization. The company already has OS X backup and file services integrated, and this move would further centralize the digital home around Apple products. But the company&#8217;s reliance on closed protocols like DAAP is worrisome, since it locks consumers into nearly all-Apple solutions.</p>
<p>Microsoft&#8217;s Media Center and Home Server combination, based around UPnP, shows great promise, with many compatible third-party clients and servers already available. But my own experience with the solution has not been at all positive (I still can&#8217;t get <a href="http://blog.fosketts.net/2007/12/17/no-more-cds/"  target="_self">my Roku SoundBridge</a>, Vista Ultimate laptop, and Media Center PC to see each other!), leading me to question the viability of this option.</p>
<p>Although Apple or Microsoft could come to dominate, I suspect the future of home storage is out of both companies hands. A number of others are working on improved home server experiences, including EMC&#8217;s LifeLine and the expanding use of Debian Linux and open source tools. But all could be sidelined by improved Internet-based services. Google, Microsoft, and Apple continue to expand their online consumer suites with greater storage, synchronization, multimedia integration, and all have the potential to reduce or eliminate the need for in-home storage.</p>
<p>Although I cannot yet tell which service will win, one thing is certain: Consumers demand friendly, flexible solutions. They don&#8217;t want to fuss with their media, and they don&#8217;t want simple shared storage. They want integration with multiple devices and flexibility to access their content on any device. The first company to offer a simple, flexible storage server for the home will surely be on the right track!</p>
