You're right that the new Mini uses PC3-8500, and mine has a single PC3-8500 SO-DIMM inside. My left-over stick is PC-5300, so I can't use it. Boo!

I'm hoping some other buyer of the $599 Mini will upgrade his RAM and let me have his leftover!

Otherwise, I'll have a spare RAM at some point...

Stephen,

You are right - I just opened iFixit's tear-down of new Mac Mini, and yes - it uses a single 1G stick. My apologies!

One clarification: The new Mac Mini tech specs say that the 1 GB mini has a single 1 GB module, not two 512s. I sure hope this is true!

Hi Stephen,

Just a couple of notes. First, if you plan to use Mac Mini to play video (by plugging it directly into your TV, as I have), you will probably want to use media players other than Front Row. Which means you'll need a bit more capable Apple Remote integration, which is delivered by something called "Sofa Control". Very nice bit of software, I must say.

Secondly, Apple TV sucks. I wanted really badly for it not to, but it did, and mine went to eBay. It is slow, and that's that.

Thirdly, Apple installs its memory in small machines in a way to provide best perfrmance, i.e. when you have a 1G, it means you have 2x512M. Which means no luck with your left-over 1G stick. :)

Goog luck with your new media set-up!
